Patriotism Requires Corporate America to Pay the Price of Standing Up to Trump, by AndySchmookler

In the battle to save American democracy, some are paying a heavier price than others — both individuals and whole institutions. That’s the way it always is in wartime: some get caught in the line of fire more directly.

It is not acceptable for corporate America to cave in to a would-be dictator simply because there is a price to be paid for resistance. Companies vulnerable to Trump’s retaliation may feel exposed, but they should accept that risk. Throughout our history, patriots have been willing to sacrifice selfish interests in defense of the nation.

And today, Corporate America is under the gun from Donald Trump — a man apparently driven to extend his power over as wide a swath as he can. His method of domination is intimidation. Whether you’re a Republican senator or a media network, he threatens people with injury – abusing the powers of his office – unless they submit to his will.

In view of how much corporations owe to America itself, such appeasement is indefensible.

"Shareholder value!" they'll squeal.

"Fiduciary responsibility!" they'll whine.

"Very important pending merger!" they'll whimper.

And just before the boxcar door closes on them and their families and mistresses, they'll be sure to shout "Don't you know who I am!!??!!??"
