Thankfully we rotated through the stations -- the stamp presses, the lathes, and some assembly -- which kept the work from being unbearably monotonous.

Quality control was intense and safety protocols strict.

It was not a job for the careless.

I came out of that with a great respect for my high school metal shop teacher who had seemed absurdly demanding to a class full of clueless fourteen and fifteen year old boys.

Yeah, shop was a boys-only class then.

I can teach someone how to spin--history, theory, and practice--in less than half an hour.

It's still going to take them a hell of a lot of practice, often years, to get really good at it.
