Middle school student arrested for 'sextortion.' There could be hundreds of victims

A middle school student in New York was arrested and charged in a sextortion scheme of fellow classmates that may have involved hundreds of victims, authorities said.

The student at Fieldstone Middle School in Stony Point in the New York City metropolitan area was accused of extorting classmates under the age of 16 using explicit material to get gift cards or more explicit content. Six victims were commended for their bravery in speaking up, but police said they have reason to believe there could be "potentially several hundred additional victims who may not yet have reported their experiences."

Fieldstone Middle School in the North Rockland School District has about 1,300 students in 7th and 8th grades, according to the Rockland/Westchester Journal News, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The accused student, whose name or age was not released, was arrested for three felony charges: use of a child in a sexual performance, promoting a sexual performance by a child and possessing a sexual performance by a child. The Stony Point Police Department said in a news release that its investigation began in February. The charges were announced Sept. 17.

"This case highlights both the serious dangers our children face online and the extraordinary bravery of students who came forward," police said in a statement.

Most of the victimes who have come forward are BOYS who believed they were talking to a girl. It isn't known if any girls were victims. All victims and the perp are under 16. Can you imagine the sick mind......?

IMHO--it is just not the accused who is 'sick' --but all these young folks are to some degree in need of long term counseling--since they were willing for the accused to use images of sexual abuse

Some think it might be as high as 20-30% of all crimes against children.

Police often don't want to report these crimes.
Or don't believe it is possible for a child to commit heinous crime,s so
report cases as unsolved.

That is slowly changing, as anti bullying initiatives show.
Yes, children can commit crimes against each other. And against their parents, siblings or neighbors.

I work on cold crime cases as a hobby.

Sometimes all the evidence points directly to a child in the home as the perpetrator
of the crime. People refuse to consider it despite 100% of the evidence pointing
right to the kid in the home.

I also do DNA investigations for adoptees.
Sometimes 100% of the DNA evidence and other evidence points right
to the parish priest or one of the grandpas as the bio father.
People cannot accept that reality and fight it.
