3. I prefer him to sit in a hospital bed for a year unable to talk and being able to do nothing but soil himself.

There are a plethora of conditions that could take him out. Just a matter of time — even with first class medical care available to him. I think the old boy is terrified of his future meeting with the Grim Reaper and is hoping the.treatments he is getting will get him out of what’s waiting for him. He should get exactly the same amount of empathy he has given out in his life. From what we have learned about him, it wouldn’t fill a thimble.
