Disney Is Scrambling After The Backlash To Jimmy Kimmel's Cancellation

Wholly unsurprising to anyone paying attention, the backlash over the abrupt cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel Live! is only continuing to grow and spread, and Disney is now scrambling to fix a situation quickly spiraling out of its control. After far-right podcaster Charlie Kirk was shot and killed, reactions have been intense, but it's Disney's knee-jerk reaction that has drawn the most ire.

There has been considerable pressure from the right to crack down on anyone saying anything even remotely controversial about Kirk, and media companies have acquiesced to this pressure. Earlier this week, on Wednesday, Disney announced that it was pulling Jimmy Kimmel from the air indefinitely after a monologue in which he didn't hold back about Trump's seeming indifference to Kirk's murder:

Kimmel's own staff, who learned the show was being suspended just before taping on Wednesday, has also been up in arms. In-person and Zoom negotiations between Disney, Jimmy Kimmel, and his staff, aimed at carving a pathway to getting Kimmel back on air, have gone nowhere. Reportedly, Disney wants Kimmel to tone down his rhetoric, as well as provide an apology to Charlie Kirk's family and donate to his right-wing organization, Turning Point USA, suggestions that have only served to increase the backlash.

Interestingly, some of the hottest anger over the decision to cave to Trump and Carr is reportedly coming from Disney studio executives and corporate management. The feeling is that CEO Bob Iger and Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Dana Walden caved too easily to MAGA pressure and manufactured outrage once again.

The joke wasn’t even about Charlie Kirk. Disney needs to stand up to Trump now or within a year he will be demanding they tear down Animal Kingdom and make it Trump Kingdom. Animals have a well known liberal bias.

In my lifetime, I've seen so much in your face corruption, lying, stealing, cheating and making up shit from shithole and cronies.

Plus the cruelty of this administration towards the American people, immigrants, students from other countries, etc is beyond insane.

it's hard to choose which is "most", is the massive cuts to cancer research. Patients in various trials and hoping for success just getting cut off at the knees. Not because we don't have the money but because the fascists simply don't care.

Dulcinea's OP is pretty fascinating. Apparently, the FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez went on Erin Burnett and said that the FCC does not “have the authority” to retaliate against broadcasters over what they choose to run on air. She said it was a baseless threat.

So on the basis of a baseless threat, (that wouldn't have any affect on the merger, then) Iger and Walden put Disney into the position of being the ones who trample the First Amendment of the United States.

it's when the government pressures them to fire people that the first amendment is destroyed.

Bill Maher got fired for a 9/11 comment.

Roseanne got fired for her crazy maga comments.

Even the MSNBC commentator who got fired for Kirk comments That's not a first amendment issue.

The Kimmel thing is different. Their goal is to take all the liberal talk shows off the air. Next I believe they will censor the internet the way fascist regimes do.

As evidenced by his statements yesterday that no one in media can make fun of him.

The Dem reps, including Jeffries, voting to honor a racist will have the same effect. Rather than "cooling the rhetoric," it will invite the next demand to bend the knee to fascism. And those insisting it doesn't matter are ridiculous.

what they were paying for the Hulu/Disney/ESPN bundle.

I don't have Hulu--never have-- and ESPN is included in my YouTube TV subscription. I did donate to my NC PBS several weeks ago and have been binging on Passport shows. PBS has been requesting donations non stop to cover what the Feds have withdrawn. I saw in the news yesterday that NC PBS has reached the point of having to make layoffs.
The quality of the shows I've watched on PBS Passport in the last few weeks has been phenomenal. Just wonderful.

This country is so fu*ked. Really fu*ked. Anything that reflects quality is being destroyed.

I can't bring myself to donate to Turning Point USA. So, I donated some more to Planned Parenthood. I forgot to tell them it's in memory of Kirk and his hateful ideas.

Regards.

Sinclair isn't really doing that though - they're saying they won't air his program unless he makes the donation.

I think it's bullshit, but no reason they can't do it.

I don't understand why ABC doesn't put the show back on the air and let the affiliates do what they do. Don't want to air it? Don't air it.

Was watching YouTube and there are several news stations around the world reporting on the news of the fascist regime’s agenda to get rid of the people they don’t want us hearing from.

There is the Dutch version of the Daily Show that makes fun of Disney, it’s funny and brutal.

The German news media is reporting on it.

Disney used to fight the fascist back in WWII, but now they embrace it with open arms.
