It seems like Nixon had a whole a-hole rap sheet too along with a cult following
Seems like the difference was congress cared about being re-elected back then and kept Nixon from going wild.
Was Nixon worse than Trump and what are the material high level changes between congress now and then?
Trying to get a historical perspective
Thx in advance

(111,464 posts)and asserted themselves--at least ultimately back then. But, I don't even think Nixon would have imagined 1% of what Trump has already pulled. And, Nixon had a conscience (not a 100% amoral sociopath).
Watergate? Quaint compared to what Trump has already done in first term, much less now.

(34,006 posts)I was literally crying because I was longing for the good old days.
When I first watched it in 2012, I thought, "He sure was corrupt". "I'm glad we got him". "Breaking into a psychiatrist's office to steal Daniel Ellsberg's medical records is about the lowest you can go"
Now I'm like, "We've got King Kong in office and we can't control him".
It's amazing what Trump has done to this country in just a few months.

(127,423 posts)Despite his authoritarian tendencies, when SCOTUS ordered him to turn over the secret tapes he complied, knowing the likely consequences. He resigned when threatened with impeachment. He didn't do or say embarrassing things in foreign countries and he understood how to behave in public (though he drank a lot in private). He was duplicitous and sneaky but he wasn't stupid. He lied sometimes, but not all the time, and his public statements were coherent even when he was lying. He had three dogs.

(34,167 posts)He was impeached wasnt because the GOP wanted to do the right thing at all, they were just afraid of their base at that time.
Today they are not afraid of the base unless they go against the piece of shit.

(20,854 posts)But as far as evil goes, Nixon did sabotage the peace talks that could have ended the Viet Nam war before the 1968 election, and then ordered the bombing of Cambodia, which destabilized that nation, leading to the Pol Pot genocide and it was on Nixons watch that the CIA assassinated Allende and installed Pinochet in Chile.

(68,722 posts)... before the election. When Reagan won, he immediately got back the remaining hostages. Nixon's policies weren't unilateral regarding Viet Nam, a lot of popular support and a military that kept it going. Nixon had some moderate leanings for a Republican.
I think this is what really defeated him in 1960 was his doing this live TV all during the Kennedy/Nixon debate:

If it weren't for Watergate, he would have been pretty good.
On the other hand there's trump. The opposite end of the spectrum. What a fucking loser.

(15,290 posts)Nixon had a duality.
As others noted, he handled himself with grace while the cameras were on or in public. And, he actually had some decent domestic policies.
But, underneath it all, he was a very insecure and angry person. He was in office at at time when there was still some sense of honor in our politics and again with the duality, he was shady and pushed and crossed over the limits when he could get away with it, but in the end ceded to the norms of society at the time.
Reagan was a hateful ideologue who put his acting experience to great benefit with the gee, golly good guy act. He was truly masterful as an orator and public figure and just had a presence that related to a lot of people at the time. As opposed to Nixon fighting with liberal democracy, he cut it out at the knees making it normal to question government while also helping to lead republicans in learning how to normalize and deliver hate speech in a way that they could wink at those who it appealed to while seeming to be innocuous (ex. welfare queen).
It ground my gears that W was a mostly feckless arrogant lightweight son of privilege. But, compared to what came both before and after him, he was not a hateful person. He meant well, but bought into the right wing bullshit and let the usual suspects he brought in do the dirt on the sly.

(52,678 posts)If your first one is Nixon, the others are
Gerald Ford: Ford understood his primary job as president was getting rid of the scum Nixon put into the government. He did semi-OK, but for some reason he kept Kissinger.
Reagan: Committed treason to get into office. Once he was there he went on a serious crime spree. Until Trump was elected Reagan stood as our most corrupt president.
Bush 41: More of the same.
Bush 43: Dubyas biggest problem is he tried to president the way he governed Texas. The Texas system is set up so the Lieutenant Governor has more power than the Governor. I wonder what hed have been like if hed have told Dick Cheney, no, youre not my running mate.
Trump: His political heroes are all dictators, and hes working hard to become one himself. Definitely Americas worst leader, and quickly becoming the worlds worst leader.
RazorbackExpat
(621 posts)He also pushed through the "Patriot" Act in the wake of 911.
Dubya was the "who cares what you think" "president" and called the Constitution "just a goddam piece of paper".
Dubya lied about seeing a tower being hit on live TV in the elementary school.
He joked about the non-existent WMDs after bombing the shit out of Innocent Iraqis.
And don't get me started on that election that his dumbass brother helped rig for him in Florida.

(34,006 posts)I survived Nixon, but was too young to vote. Life was pretty much status quo during his term. Johnson was president from when I was in second through eighth grade. Nixon was eighth through senior year. To me, the country was pretty much the same with both presidents. There was more turmoil during Johnson's presidency. Nixon's crimes were white collar and under the radar and took alot of digging to find out. Trump is "out there" crazy.
Trump wants to destroy the country.
Nixon was corrupt.
Rating of GOP Presidents in my life
Ford
Bush (1989) (tie)
Nixon (tie)
GW Bush
Reagan
Trump
Eisenhower was president when I was born, but I don't remember him, so I can't rate him. Most rank Eisenhower as the best GOP president of the past 100 years.
Nixon is pretty much tied with the George HW Bush in my book.
Reagan was worse than Nixon
Trump is worse than Reagan
Trump's first term his harm was more on par with Reagan's harm. (Although different)
This term, he's much worse than Reagan.

(2,340 posts)People seem to forget he, through third parties, sabotaged the 1968 Paris Peace Talks that would have ended the Vietnam War, thus not just ensuring his re-election, but he stretched that war out unnecessarily to ensure his re-election. Hundreds of thousands of people died simply because Nixon wanted to gain and keep power. Watergate was in large part a result of Nixon's paranoia of being found out for having violated the Logan Act.
Nixon should have been tried at The Hague.
Trump is an idiot who has truly evil people in charge of running things, but Nixon stands alone with his treachery. Nixon was vastly more intelligent than Trump. However, his mental problems concerning hate against his perceived enemies was his downfall.
People tend to forget how devastating the Vietnam War was to people's faith in our country's institutions. Ditto for Watergate. These set the stage for the mess we have today.

With that Trump doesn't exist without Nixon, Reagan and the Bush's and without the Republican party of the last 75 years.
Change order of birth and I would say, other than George HW Bush, they all would be as shitty if not worse.
George W is the least likely, but dumb as a rock so he gets mention. The remaning two, just as bad as tRump.

(58,999 posts)Nixon picked a decent, competent VP who could actually take over without the country falling apart (Gerry Ford). Storm clouds were already gathering, and Nixon knew he might not complete his second term, even though in 1973, it didnt yet look imminent. At least he cared about the countrys continuity. JD Vance is the choice of someone who does not.

There were still several moderate Eisenhower Republicans in Congress that would hold Nixon accountable. Even the conservative GOP know when it was time to cut bait about Watergate.
trump has ne guard rails. Almost all of the GOP side of congress is with him all the way and will do ANYTHING to keep him in power. I don't think that Nixon could ever get away with blowing up boats in Venezuela, at least not in the era that he rose to power.
