Protests as newborn removed from Greenlandic mother after ‘parenting competence’ tests

Danish authorities take one-hour-old infant despite law banning the tests on people with Greenlandic backgrounds

Miranda Bryant Nordic correspondent
Sat 23 Aug 2025 07.00 EDT

A Greenlandic mother’s one-hour-old baby was removed from her by Danish authorities after she underwent “parenting competence” tests – despite a new law banning the use of the controversial psychometric assessments on people with Greenlandic backgrounds.

Ivana Nikoline Brønlund, who was born in Nuuk to Greenlandic parents and has played for the Greenlandic handball team, gave birth to her daughter, Aviaja-Luuna, on 11 August in a hospital in Hvidovre, near Copenhagen, where she lives with her family.

An hour later, the local municipality took the infant into foster care. Brønlund, 18, says she has since only seen her daughter once, for an hour, when she was not allowed to comfort the baby or change her nappy.

The “parenting competence” tests, known as FKU (forældrekompetenceundersøgelse), were banned on people with Greenlandic backgrounds earlier this year after years of criticism by campaigners and human rights bodies, who argued successfully that the tests were racist because they were culturally unsuitable for people from Inuit backgrounds. As the law came into force in May, campaigners are asking why Brønlund was still subjected to a test.

… more … still not white enough …

3. You can not develop and norm a test on one group and then use it for another group.

In fact in some countries this practice would be illegal as well as unethical.

You cannot invent a test and norm it on one group and then use it on another totally
different group.

This woman should sue the hell out of the Danish govt and there would be many
American psychologists who would testify on her behalf.

from an American psychologist? Seriously they have excellent psychologists in Denmark and Europe. The idea of American exceptionalism is still alive and well.

5. I don't think you have to be American or exceptional to precieve inhumanity toward a new mother and child.

After reading this, my mind automatically filled in the blanks for FKU. I am betting I am not alone here.

excluded from the legitimate science and psychometric community.

They are committing illegal and unethical acts.

ETA: Insulting American psychologists who follow the law and ethics as your defense
is a very weak argument. Which further proves my point. When the lack of science and law
cannot be defended, insulting others seems to be the course of action.

It is particularly heinous to use an unethical testing procedure to separate a mother
from her newborn infant. Thereby disrupting critical bonding experiences and breast feeding
which may have serious negative lifelong consequences.

There must be data and facts apart from this inappropriate testing procedure to warrant
such a serious legal and clinical decision.
