Yes, he sends barbs Biden and Harris way but they were the ones who lost. But if you can just ignore these, there ae important ideas or 2026 and for 2028.
(This is not bashing Democrats but a serious look at what we should consider)

His barbs about Biden's age apply to him.

(9,478 posts)For as much as the Republican-biased mainstream loves to interview the everyday Trump-supporting American, how many of them have you heard say they voted for him because of his "no tax on tips?" Or his deregulation of crypto?
LOL, what a crock of shit.
In It to Win It
(11,433 posts)I don't go looking for interviews of Trump supporters but I have seen interviews before of restaurant workers saying they liked the "no tax on tips."
W_HAMILTON
(9,478 posts)...and their jobs are at risk because of it.
And that is entirely due to Trump's policies.
PS - Kamala also supported "no tax on tips," but I guess that's an inconvenient truth for newly alt right bro ally Maher who apparently is going to end his career bending over backwards trying -- but ultimately failing -- to justify the reasons why racist and bigots voted for Trump instead of Kamala.
In It to Win It
(11,433 posts)I'm sure "no tax on tips" pulled in some people. They took the bet on him first and worried about the details later.
Basically, the "no tax on tips" may have been that thing that pulled in 0.15% of people, and then embracing cypto may have pulled in another 0.10% of voters... and so on. His support among Black people improved in 2024. Sure, he lost Black people by a wide margin but in Pennsylvania and Michigan, any little percentage point he could have taken from Kamala Harris mattered. His support among young people increased.
The point is that he used these issues that mattered to a small amount of people to eek out the wins in close states, and things like "no tax on tips" and the inconvenience of taking your shoes off at the airport meant enough to a small group to bet on him to come out ahead by a few thousand votes.
To your point, of course, he's going to have the assholes, the bigots and the racists vote for him... but these little niche groups that cared about these niche issues may have put him over the top. The racists and the bigots probably aren't enough of them to put him over the top in Nevada.

(92,455 posts)Most black men did vote for Harris but compared to other Democrsts it was lower.
It had nothing to do with policies.
Support for Trump was mainly about resentment of others. That includes non whites that voted for him.
And Harris said she would suppory no tax on tips before the election.
In It to Win It
(11,433 posts)It was too late.
The convenient conclusion that people can say is that she was copying Trump. The perception of that conclusion was not a good one.
That's not to say she was disingenuous on that position. The public perception of the timing was not in her favor.
JI7
(92,455 posts)In It to Win It
(11,433 posts)so there was nothing we could have done or said to get those people. They all would have just found some excuse to vote for him anyway. The increase in support among Black people, Latinos, and young people in 2024... they would have had some excuse to vote for him anyway whether it be resentment toward another group or bigotry so nothing to be done or said.
That's how I interpret you. 🤔
JI7
(92,455 posts)would have helped but it wouldn't have anything to do with issues.
A younger Joe Biden would have won .

(104,410 posts)then no, it's not "important". Because those are the kind of things that Trump voters say they like(d) about him. It's Maher trying to justify his toadying to Trump, by listing the things he likes about Trump.
And no, it's not a "serious look at what we should consider". Because we're not toadies to a rapist, unlike Maher.

(29,724 posts)The Democrats are a big tent party and there are a thousand different reasons why people become disaffected with the Democratic Party that they go so far to consider the Republican party. I think one of the bigger reasons was foreign policy -- there are a lot who were on the left and in the Democratic Party fooled into thinking Trump was the peace candidate. There are of course those that think the party moved too far to the right or to the left depending on who your asking.
I saw the warning signs of a rising far right nationalist movement going back to 2016 but I downplayed it. Now it is too late and we may not even have a fair & free election maybe by the midterms with Trump's BS about mail-in ballots.
Silent Type
(10,682 posts)we can't get enough people to the polls maybe we deserve whatever we get.
We didn't even win the popular vote this time around.

(10 posts)Look at Nevada. Maher mentions they voted for Trump because no tax on tips! Except the no tax on tips is a mess of rules on what qualifies that also doesn't really change The Now because these people weren't directly paying taxes on tips and instead only doing it when they filed their taxes, assuming they even counted tips.
But Trump has been devastating for Nevada. No one can afford to travel, international travel to the US has tanked and the state's economy, which is based on tourism has floundered. Now those same people relying on tips are getting less tips overall because there's less people tipping.
In It to Win It
(11,433 posts)It is reasonable to assume that it would look like how it sounds.
People were willing to bet on Trump's "no tax on tips" message now (in November) and worry about the details of what it looked like later.
Silent Type
(10,682 posts)AFTER trump proposed it. Not blaming her because no one could have campaigned harder than her, but she was put in a tough situation.
I'm sorry, we should have done better.
In It to Win It
(11,433 posts)Kamala Harris, obviously, was dealt a tough hand (maybe a losing hand) from the start. I think she did the best she could have under the circumstances.

(10 posts)And after Trump came out for it:

W_HAMILTON
(9,478 posts)Fact of the matter is voters didn't like their current situation and they blamed Democrats because they were in power at the time.
Now, just a few months after Republicans took complete control of the federal government, voters HATE their situation and they are (rightfully) blaming Trump and his MAGAts for it.
Too bad they were too stupid to listen to those of us that warned them of this in advance, but I guess some people just need to touch the hot stove to see for themselves...
