Revealed: Israeli military's own data indicates civilian death rate of 83% in Gaza war

Figures from a classified Israeli military intelligence database indicate five out of six Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in Gaza have been civilians, an extreme rate of slaughter rarely matched in recent decades of warfare.

As of May, 19 months into the war, Israeli intelligence officials listed 8,900 named fighters from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad as dead or “probably dead”, a joint investigation by the Guardian, the Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call has found.

At that time 53,000 Palestinians had been killed by Israeli attacks, according to health authorities in Gaza, a toll that included combatants and civilians. Fighters named in the Israeli military intelligence database accounted for just 17% of the total, which indicates that 83% of the dead were civilians.

That apparent ratio of civilians to combatants among the dead is extremely high for modern warfare, even compared with conflicts notorious for indiscriminate killing, including the Syrian and Sudanese civil wars.

And anyone who wants to use the "genocide" or "extermination" or whatever syntax war against me... You are only fooling yourself.

One can defend Israelis who never wanted this and who protested Bibi in incredible numbers just this past weekend. One cannot defend Bibi Netanyahu and his RW extremists for what they have done. Period.

Not great company for Israel to be in, and most on the left who have tried to argue there's no war crimes or targetting of civilians would never have used similar argument for Srebrenica or Bosnia.

Also, fuck Netanyahu and his murderous thugs. He's turned on Australia because the government cancelled a visa for one of his most extreme ministers. According to him it's anti-semitic to cancel that visa lol. Fuck him. I'd use the 'c' word to describe him, but I know it upsets some Americans.

5. Good gawd.. Will those still defending him brag that Rwanda is (for now) worse in terms of civilian deaths?

uggh...

And, yes, for those who want to point out what countries the US is now in league with in terms of our rapidly disappearing democracy, well, I won't argue the point. And certainly, if one looks at Trump's COVID-19 mortality as but one measure from his last term, the decimation of health research and access to health care thus far in this one, well, there is a case to be made. No argument here.

6. He's also mad that Australia has decided to recognize Palestine.

He calls it a betrayal. He should talk, he betrayed humanity and the historic suffering of his own people. Damn him and his right-wing government and ministers to hell.

10. Yep, while Albo was restrained and diplomatic, Tony Burke took the gloves off....

Of course Sky News* is outraged and appalled that Albo dare recognise a Palestinian state, and is spewing the same RW talking points that have unfortunately crept onto DU over the past year or so. Also, Netanyahu dares to speak on behalf of Australian Jews when even the more RW Jewish groups who normally don't support anything the ALP does have spoken out in support of Albo after the very undiplomatic attack.

*Sky News is the Australian equivalent of Fox News. I only watch it for shits and giggles.

"Strength is not measured by the number of people you blow up...or the number of children you leave hungry".

It's seriously effed up how one evil man is allowed to bully, insult and prance upon the world stage, preaching about weakness, betrayal and shame. A man that appears to never have looked in the mirror and who possesses absolutely no sense of shame himself. If he had an ounce of it, 20,000 Palestinian kids would still be alive and the rest healthy and fed.

I'm curious though - why Australia? Why did the Evil One single out Albanese but not France, Canada and the UK? I think it's because Albanese was so pro-Israel and sycophantic from the start that his turn really seems like a betrayal to Netanyahu. He better get used to it.

I'm, of course, not surprised, but it should be harder for Netanyahu's defenders to deny the high rate of civilian casualties and overall devastation of the war. It should be. Also, it reveals that the argument that Gaza is no different in its casualties than any other war is blatantly false.

7. Quote from the +972 article

Aug 21
"the list [of dead combatants] is based on [Hamas and PIJ's] own internal documents acquired by the army...The intelligence sources explained that the total number of Hamas and PIJ operatives killed is likely higher than the number recorded in the internal database, since it does not include operatives who were killed but could not be identified by name, Gazans who took part in fighting but were not officially members of Hamas or PIJ, nor political figures in Hamas such as mayors and government ministers whom Israel also considers legitimate targets (in violation of international law)."

So these are named members of Hamas, IJ etc. not all combatants.

12. Just like the list of Palestinian dead holds ONLY those that could be identified.

Tens of thousands more dead Palestinians atw missing or have not been accounted for - could not be matched with an ID number, are trapped in rubble, buried without being taken to a hospital or lying unburied..

It will come to light that the Palestinian death toll is many times higher than currently known. Those Israeli bulldozers have been busy... But every person in Gaza has an ID number and they will not be "disappeared" as some would like.

Reminder, there is no evidence of widespread stealing of food and supplies by Hamas. Famine is the goal of the Far Right Extremists in control of Israel's government and military right now.
