General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo I see the League of Women voters of California is telling people to vote no on redistricting.
President of the League of Women voters, Gloria Chun Hoo wrote and editorial in the Sacramento Bee talking about "fairness"
https://www.sacbee.com/opinion/op-ed/article311506653.html
and they are sending mailers out and advertisements throughout the state pushing that.
So WTF are the Democrats supposed to do, just roll over and let the republicans do EXACTLY this in red states while securing a republican majority in the house for decades?
The League of Women Voters say they are "nonpartisan", and pride themselves on that. Well, they can take that nonpartisan bullshit, and put it where the sun don't shine. Our Democracy is hanging on by a thread, and they are effectively preaching to just let the fascists take over.
As I get older, I am less and less tolerant of idiocy, and what the League of Women Voters is suggesting is pure idiocy.
They have just motivated me to donate to the Newsom redistricting proposition.
I tried to call them to voice my opposition to their view. The line is busy. Hopefully it is California voters telling them they are full of it.

(14,840 posts)From yesterday's NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/20/us/politics/democratic-party-voter-registration-crisis.html
Of the 30 states that track voter registration by political party, Democrats lost ground to Republicans in every single one between the 2020 and 2024 elections and often by a lot.
That four-year swing toward the Republicans adds up to 4.5 million voters, a deep political hole that could take years for Democrats to climb out from.

The Texas Legislature is rushing through a flawed, mid-decade redistricting process, without new census data, transparency, or meaningful public input.
As part of theFair Maps Texas Coalition, the League of Women Voters of Texas is standing up against this power grab.
Last week, more than 3,000 Texans testified at redistricting hearings across the state, and over 4,000 public comments were submitted. Clickhereto view the testimony given by LWV Texas at the hearing in Austin. The message was loud and clear: the process is broken, and many believe it's being rigged on purpose..
On Wednesday, lawmakers released a new congressional map thst is gerrymandered, discriminatory, and drafted in secret. Now, they're rushing it through committee, leaving voters little time to review or respond before it's finalized.
Heres whats wrong:
Racial gerrymandering is being used to silence communities of color.
Hearings are announced with minimal notice.
Proposed maps are released just hours before public testimony.
Private D.C. lawyers are advising lawmakers behind closed doors.
We deserve better. Texas deserves better.
Join the League of Women Voters of Texas in demanding a fair, transparent redistricting process that serves all Texans, not just political insiders!

(3,722 posts)There are League of Women Voters in every state. What do they say in Texas? Have they put out a statement. Are they just being suppressed by Texas' reich-wing media?
Maybe they could do a joint press conference with their California colleagues. They better do it quickly though, if the Republicans have their way any disloyal, "both sides", groups may be disbanded.

(113,863 posts)There is no "fairness" to any of this. Abbott and his courtiers are f;at out cheating and these nervous ladies are apparently blind to that fact. The only way to counter a cheater or anyone who wants something at your expense is to let him know that you know what's going on as you tilt things the other way so that his efforts are wasted. Then you let him know he can be hurt, too. That last part usually takes care of him. That's how it's worked for me, anyway.
Perhaps maundering about fairness has its place in normal times, but these times are not normal. Until they are, the LWV has just declared itself irrelevant and I find that very sad.

(8,065 posts)I thought that Texas was redistricting when they weren't supposed to? And then, when Texas Dems vamoosed out of state, they tried to ARREST them? And then, when they returned, they put them basically on house arrest, totally illegal?
We're in this fight to win it. Repubs just lost in Court. We're going to vote YES, and we're going to win! And, all Abbott gets for his trouble is a lawsuit!
We're in a cold war. We have to vote for a pathway back to sane government. Fascists can go to hell!
Just put the flyer in your bathroom for a discretionary emergency. And, that was another waste of money. Nonpartisan, my ass.

(4,236 posts)morning I went to the LWV website and they had a splash screen saying to vote no against the redistricting.
and who is this Gloria Chun Hoo?
"Dont upend fairness: Say no to mid-cycle redistricting in California | Opinion By Gloria Chun Hoo Special to The Sacramento Bee"

https://www.sacbee.com/opinion/op-ed/article311506653.html
Either someone hacked their website, and falsely falsely presented themselves as the president of the LWV, or some real weird dirty trick.
They need to do more than just put a screen up saying they weren't behind it, they need to sue someone's ass, and go to the media and get it reported.

(1 post)They may not be part of this _one_ particular mailer campaign, but they ARE on board with the GOP effort to prevent a California response to the Texas power grab. They seem content to let the Republicans game the system to retain control of congress in 2026 despite the will of the voters.
