Last edited Thu Aug 21, 2025, 09:08 AM - Edit history (1)
In what the White House has hailed as a major breakthrough in peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced he has agreed to direct, one-on-one negotiations with the individual who they believe to be Ukraines true and legitimate sovereign leader.
That individual happens to be none other Viktor Yanukovych, the former Ukrainian President who left office in 2014 and fled to Russia after massive protests against him erupted throughout the country due to claims of his rampant corruption and subservience to Moscows heavy influence.
The Kremlin all but ruled out any chance that Putin would engage in any direct talks with Ukraines current president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy is the fruit of the poisonous tree, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a statement issued to the press. He is the bastard child of Western powers who eleven years ago engaged in an illegal coup of Ukraines last true leadership and installed their own puppet to act in accordance with their own whims and desires.
Zelenskyy was democratically elected Ukraines president in 2019, five years after the events of what has commonly been referred to as the Maidan Revolution took place. He succeeded Petro Poroshenko, who came to office in May 2014 in elections that were likewise deemed fair and democratic by international observers.
Yanukovych himself was elected in 2010, but soon fell into disfavor with the Ukrainian people after allegations of corruption swirled. During his time in office it is believed he and his allies may have pocketed up to $37 billion from the nations treasury.
In 2013, Yanukovych spurned a proposed trade deal with the European Union in favor of closer relations with Russia. Large protests against Yanukovych in Kyivs Independence Square erupted as a result. The protests were initially peaceful, but Yanukovych ultimately sought to crack down on the movement with his Berkut special police force.
Undeterred by Yanukovychs violent crackdown, the protests continued through February 2014. A night of sniper shootings left over 100 people dead on the square, all while Yanukovych was already reportedly packing up his belongings at his luxurious suburban Kyiv estate. Yanukovych left Kyiv by helicopter the night of February 22, 2014, ultimately landing in Russia where the Kremlin had granted him asylum.
He has not left Russia or returned to Ukraine since.
Four days after Yanukovych abdicated power, Russian military under secret cover seized Ukraines Crimean Peninsula, later annexing it as its own territory. Shortly thereafter, separatist forces in Ukraines Donetsk and Luhansk regionsheavily supplemented and supported by the Russian militarybegan an armed conflict against the Ukrainian government. That conflict in Ukraines eastern regions simmered all the way up to Russias full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Yanukovychnow residing in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Donwas asked to comment on the developments and whether hed agree to Moscows offer.
Sure, why not? Yanukovych reportedly said. It is not like I have much else going on at the moment. It will probably be a lot of fun, to be honest.
Meanwhile, the Trump administrationfresh off a summit with Putin in Alaska as well as a meeting with Zelensky and European leaders in Washingtonhas enthusiastically viewed Putins offer to meet with Yanukovych as a positive step towards ending the years-long conflict.
Its a great thing, a wonderful, beautiful thing, President Donald Trump said to a group of gathered reporters. I honestly dont care who Putin meets with, so long as it stops this terrible, horrible war that was started by Biden and Zelenskyy, and it would never have ever started if I were President. I can tell you that now.
DETAILS AT ELEVEN.

(44,156 posts)...who was working with Rudy Giuliani on his push to get dirt on Biden. He's since been charged with being a Russian agent, not surprisingly.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/nov/14/ukraine-mp-linked-to-giuliani-charged-with-colluding-with-russia
There was also Yuriy Lutsenko, the Ukrainian prosecutor general who succeeded Viktor Shokin, a former prosecutor who was heavily corrupt (and who Trumpists have falsely accused Biden of forcing the Ukrainians to fire supposedly to protect his son).
Lutsenko was an interesting case. He was actually considered one of the heroes of Maidan, being severely beaten by Yanukovych's goons.
He initially indicated to Rudy and company a willingness to investigate Biden, but later reneged, saying he didn't actually have any information on him.
But unlike Dubinsky, there doesn't appear to have been any evidence Lutsenko was working with the Russians, and his actions may have simply been the result of personal political ambition.

in reality Russia actually has attempted to raise the issue of legitimacy of any Ukrainian signatories to any peace agreement.
Meaning they dont view Zelensky as legitimate and would probably ignore the terms of any agreement on those grounds.

(29,541 posts)Putin didn't want to conquer Ukraine by military force. Putin wanted to storm into Kyiv and install a pro-Russian president, that's why he said it would take 3 days.
When Putin invaded Crimea he agreed to hold elections to determine who Crimea wants to be ruled by. Just yesterday Malcolm Nance stated that Putin stuffed the ballot boxes in the Crimean election, the people didn't really want to be governed by Russia.
Yanukovych is a Russian stooge as crooked as a dog's hind leg.
The White House announcing it supports Yanukovych is another public announcement that the United States is with Putin and Russia.
Putin must have shown Krasnov some scary shit in Alaska.
Look, if this is satire, and I guess it is, it isn't that far fetched.

(44,156 posts)I do like to write, and DU provides me one of those outlets for my writing.
I could make my satire hackish and predictable over jokes that have already long been made and circulated ad naseum, but there would really be no fun for me in that. Even if it comes off more obviously as satire at first glance.
If you read my satire pieces clearly enough, it should be obvious that it's not an actual news piece. There should always be some element to it that clearly defies reality. The Russians demanding that they negotiate with a former President of Ukraine who has been out of power for 11 years and is living in Russia is simply not realistic.
But there should also be a certain element and degree of truth behind the satire nonetheless. The Russians do in fact openly question the legitimacy of Zelensky as Ukraine's leader, even though that's exactly who he is. I take that fact and build a satirical story around that fact.
That's the fine line I like to walk.
I mean, I can't speak for people who only get their news by reading headlines.

(722 posts)Satire has a long and cherished place in western civilization. If you don't recognize the satire, just read the accompanying comments because somebody else will. I can honestly say it took no more than a glance at the comment to recognize satire.

(44,156 posts)...is an account for a "Representative Jack Kimble."
You can find it here:
https://x.com/RepJackKimble
Kimble purports to be a Republican representative from California's 54th Congressional District.
When I first came across Representative Kimble's postings on Twitter, he struck me as one of those all-too-many clueless Republicans with terrible takes on just about everything. But in a world full of Marjorie Taylor Greenes, Matt Gaetzs, Lauren Boeberts, Paul Gosars, and multiple other idiotic fools that somehow found themselves elected to office, I didn't find it all that strange.
Nonetheless, I recall posting more than a couple of snarky responses to Kimble's idiotic musings when I discovered him.
It was only a little bit afterwards that I discovered one important thing:
There is no Representative Jack Kimble. There is no 54th Congressional District in California.
It certainly was believable enough--it's not as though majority of the 435 members of the House of Representatives are really household names, so Kimble's name going undetected would not be that unusual. California is the largest state by population, so the idea that there would be a 54th Congressional District is believable enough (and even in a heavily blue state, there are still more than a couple of outlier districts in California.)
Once I found out that Representative Kimble was not a real Congressman but rather a mere parody of one--once I was in on the joke--it made following his satirical account all the more enjoyable.
Now I'm able to follow along as part of the joke, and I don't enjoy it any less.
A good satire will go a long way in helping to cope with unfortunate realities.

Yes, a thorough reading of your posts would make clear they are satire

You indeed walk a fine line

(44,156 posts)If there is ever any actual breaking news to be had, I personally either post it in the Latest Breaking News forum, or I post here with a link to a reputable source.
Clickbait is a certainly a problem.
The thing about my satire pieces, however, is that there's no weblink to be clicked. That--and my trademark "Details at Eleven" picture--should be a sign that this isn't actually a real news piece, even if the intended satire falls flat despite my best efforts.
I would never take for face value anyone's claim of actual news without any type of accredited source. Not here at DU or anywhere else.
What's more is even if there is a link, it doesn't guarantee anything in and of itself.
Too often you'll see someone provide a link to the source, only to find that it's from a dubious website that should never be taken as a legit news source. Or maybe it's one of those AI generated fever dreams of a Youtube clip that sometimes people fall victim to.
Writing these pieces is just one of my ways of trying to make sense of a senseless world.

(19,960 posts)I was just thinking last night (in my thinking moments) that the current state of affairs MUST HAVE BEEN WRITTEN BY PADDY CHAYEVSKY, if not Rod Serling and his brilliant staff of writers and guest writer Ray Bradbury.
It is truly a Twilight Zone episode played out IRL.
Now, as to identifying an article as satire, I usually do that, because my writing can be ultra dry.
So, I posted this gem:
Zelenskyy inks BIG DEAL with Krasnov. (From the Alfredo Fettucini News Agency)

An article that I spent some time writing and preparing a graphic that IMNSHO, is mighty fine
And it got all of 5 recs.
Not that Im counting, but I do like to see what registers and various means to improve my communication skills.
HONESTY DOESNT WORK.
People REALLY, REALLY, REALLY love clickbait.
Even here.
Such titles as:
Wow!

Breaking News!
Give me a break.
Look at this lovely graphic,
Notice the fantastic transformation of the name NOBEL into NOBLE.
This was not just typing alternate text.
It was a challenge.
Now, Im not saying that we should be subtle with the mentally-challenged MAGA world out there. Youve sometimes got to be brutally direct with them, like this:
Uncle Jeffery is gone. Lets play strip-checkers
If I label a post as satire, or give some outrageous source its not a compliment.
