Trump hikes tariffs on Canada to 35%, announces rates from 10% to 40% for dozens of countries

The White House took a step forward with President Trump’s plan to remake the trade landscape by releasing new details Thursday evening that included a raft of new tariff rates now formally authorized by executive order, which set levels from 10% to 40% on nearly every global trading partner.

The move represents a giant shakeup in the US's trade order, with outlined rates that range from a 35% tariff on Canada (up from 25% currently) to rates above 30% on nations from South Africa to Switzerland.

But there's a last minute catch, as nearly all these new rates (except for Canada's) will not go into effect for seven days, instead of a midnight Friday deadline Trump had previously said.

"These modifications shall be effective ... on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time 7 days after the date of this order," reads the now signed order.

What Trump is doing is illegal, yet Congress, GOP and Dem, just seem to shrug. Even many of the American people seem to be shrugging. Some out of fealty to Trump, some (like me) out of a sense of hopelessness since the people who have the POWER to do something, aren't.

IMO, we've crossed the Rubicon, and there is no going back. We aren't in danger of losing our Democracy, we already have.

I'm just a ray of sunshine, aren't I?

Fight friggin' fire with fire. I love that Gavin Newsom is coming out fighting, particularly with his threat to redistrict the GOP out of existence if Texas goes through with their gerrymander, but I fear that is just saber rattling.

Dems need to fight back with FORCE and be willing to get down in the mud. We'll see if they have the backbone. I feel some do, but not sure if it will be enough.

Thanks for the encouragement, right now I'm pretty much out of hope.

Many Americans thank you for your friendship. Thank you for helping us after 911. You were here first. Our family lost Paul on 911 he worked at Canter Fitsgerald. He has not been found. Thank you from our family for your great and selfless effort. We will never forget. Next year will be the 25th anniversary of this tragedy.
I hope for a day when normal relations will return.
You have been with us through thick and thin.

Thank You.
Thank you!

That said, hope the pedofelon (still unpunished and still rewarded) and his sycophants in Congress will be defeated in 3.5 years (or earlier) and that the business relationship will be restored.

But what if another maladministration shows up after them and again breaks all the rules?

The United States system of politics has now proven it is much too unstable to be considered a reliable business partner.

Because, in part, justice matters!

Canada’s P.M. Carney and Mexico’s Sheinbaum have already cut a trade between the 2
Nations that bypasses the United States. Carney has a B.S. in economics from Harvard
along with a masters and a doctorate in economics from Oxford, and was the #1 person
@ the Bank of England Mexican President Sheinbaum has a PhD in engineering and has
written extensively on energy and substantial environmental policies.

Btw all those tariffs are not paid by other nations or companies they are passed onto the
American people.
