He knows whether he's being revered or criticized. He knows whether he's getting his way. He knows whether he's causing enough pain to people who are not him. He knows whether people fear him and his flying monkeys. He knows whether he's getting away with it. And he thinks he knows whether he's hiding his dyslexia, drugs, illness, dementia and lifelong incompetence.

Like I said, i read it once, I don't know how accurate it is, but I love its value as a metaphor for people like Trump, who have no conscience, no values, just a singular, simplistic, relentless quest for the three things I mentioned in the subject line.

Everything you named is in alignment with that. And yes, he summarily dismisses anything that won't get him closer to those three "goals."

And because the only "relationships" Trump knows how to maintain are abusive ones (where he is the abuser, obviously), he'll string Musk along. There's no mistaking the fact that Musk is a power groupie, a moth who will circle that flame as closely as possible, thinking his wings won't get singed.

Trump also delights in cruelty, and we've seen it in some of his recent remarks, with Musk standing a few feet away.

Trump is probably delighted by the fact that Musk has a drug problem, because in his mind, it makes him easier to manipulate (and it probably does, actually).

You can get away with a lot if you just kiss his ass.

Trump went for the job to stay out of jail, and bask in the (imagined) glory and worship of other dictators around the world - and fools who believe his fractured view of reality.

Trump is old. He's in deep mental decline and it shouldn't be expected that he knows what's going on around him. Soon he'll probably forgot what day it is most of the time.
