I had just graduated from the University of Texas, but no one would give me a job since I was 1-A and had a low draft lottery number.
I moved to this Island in April of 1970 to have fun in the sun until the inevitable. On August 3, 1970, a hurricane hit us dead center.
My rental was gone with the wind. I slept on a cot in the Community Center, manning the radio, controlling Ferry traffic to the mainland. It was hot, there were mosquitoes, and I bathed in the Gulf of Mexico (est.1552).
A week later, after restoration of electricity and phone service, I called my parents to tell them I was ok. My mom said, Thank goodness. Your draft notice is here,
After discharge from the Army two years later, I returned to this Island town and been here ever since. Its changed, more development, short-term rentals, and golf carts, but I have loved it. 55 years
.its gone by fast
from a kid to a geezer in a wink of an eye. 🏝️

malaise
(285,528 posts)Lots of rain today and likely flooding in the next week given the storms coming from the Pacific and Central Ameri ca.
That said we welcomed the rain today. If it continues into next week , we might face a mess.

(12,540 posts)You dodged the bullet during in the storm and service. That's 2 don't take any chances if a storm comes your way.
I was 11 when Carls hit. I remember that some violated the orders heading to Galveston to ride the waves generated by the storm.

(28,163 posts)$930,000,000 in 1970 is worth $7,665,285,309.28 today.
That was the same year I did my antiwar hunger strike. I went down to 98 lbs and my mom had to take me to the doctor. My dad was in Vietnam at the time. He volunteered.
I'm glad you survived, surfered.

(28,163 posts)A quote there sums up what you said,
~Robert Lloyd
I was a typical flower child, long hair, halter tops and bell bottoms. That year I had all my hair cut off, down to what was called a pixie, in solidarity with the guys that were drafted.

Great school. Lucky to grow up in Austin and able go there. It was a weird time. Whitman shooting people from the Tower in 66, then the protests of 68 and 69.

(4,174 posts)Both he and my mom went to Texas, as did my grandmother, two aunts, and all three of my brothers.
My dad remembers listening to the radio the day Whitman went up the tower, and hearing the announcer go into shock when he read--live on air--his own son's name as one of the victims. Horrifying stuff.

(29,253 posts)I'll just throw in my usual plea to boycott Airbnb and VRBO right here.

(7,383 posts)There are few long term rentals as short term can charge so much more. There is labor shortage and a few businesses have closed due to that even though theyve raised the starting pay to $14-15 an hour.
The commute from the mainland is difficult. From one direction theres a wait for the ferry. The other route is by causeway but takes an hour, so $14 an hr nets you $11 counting the round trip commute.
It used to be affordable living here but demand for beach living has changed that.
The demographic has changed. We used to be 66% Democrat and 33% Republican. That has been reversed.
We have a small high school (40 seniors). Driving thru their parking lot in the old days, you would have seen bicycles and rust buckets. Now, its BMWs and Land Rovers.

(29,253 posts)Teachers can't afford to live there, the veterinarian retired and there is nowhere for a replacement to live, and the people who rent out the houses simply don't care. And there is little appetite to regulate it.
I bet and beg my friends not to stay in Airbnb, but it falls on deaf ears. It's convenient for them, which I guess is more important than whether a teacher or firefighter can afford to live in the place where they work.
And forget about finding a place for a family. All the new housing I see being built anywhere is small, dense apartments.
