Why young voters flocked to Canada's Conservatives (BBC)

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd6j9z3dqg8o

Ahead of the election, support for the Conservatives outpaced the Liberals by 44% to 31.2% among 18 to 34 year olds, a Nanos poll on 25 April indicated.

The issues that resonated with Canadians depended on age, too. Carney campaigned heavily on standing up to Trump, while affordability and a broken "Canadian promise" were central to Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre's message.

Abacus Data polling indicated about 18% of 18 to 29 year olds were worried about Trump. That jumped to 45% for voters over 60, suggesting a diversion on key issues between generations.

A big challenge for Carney and the Liberals will be how they can win back the confidence of those younger voters, Mr Coletto said, who "feel really let down and frustrated".

... it has been widely reported here in Canada.

Then again, we have no clue as to exactly what you are objecting to.

Excessive terseness obfuscates.

The center-left has not delivered for young people. The cost of living is crushing. My sister is 22 with a degree and full time job at UPS and it’s still difficult to afford life. I know this is due to right wing policies, but, we need to find a way to communicate to young people who don’t have pensions, an affordable home, etc. ignoring the problem or wagging our finger at them will get us more of the same.

back in the mid eighties my mother’s place of work (a bank) decided to get rid of pensions and take the money my mom had paid into it (as well as other employees) and roll them over into I think 401k. She was very mad because she was so close to retirement. My dad had a pension. Both were basically forced to retire before they had planned in the late eighties. Same thing happened to my FIL. Forced to retire, but had a pension. Then the company, after he retired, got bought and they basically bankrupted it, and the pension guaranty corporation took over the pensions. That was 1989.

to a lot of people nearing retirement age back in the late eighties as I remember. Many were encouraged /forced to retire early with the promise of maybe ten or fifteen thousand dollars if they did. My dad was around 57 when he was, in my opinion, forced out. He had to wait another five years to get SS. They did let him keep his health insurance (he worked at a health insurance company ffs) for several years and then cut him off with other early retirees.

For speaking up with a Canadian perspective. The far right is making gains everywhere, I think it’s important to share experiences and mistakes.

He announced priorities that include addressing the housing crisis, affordability, and crime.

Then he walked along Sparks Street to his office.

9. There are problems with immigration in Canada

They let in a bunch of people from India and some other places that should never have been let in. There is a huge scam involving fake colleges and people getting in as students but with no intention of studying and they take jobs in places like retail and fast food that young people would usually take.

This has also affected the housing market.

This is why Trudeau was so unpopular.

This is why I say as liberals we need a clear strict message on immigration becsuse the other side can take advantage. And now see what Trump is doing. Canada wouldn't have been as bad but it's something liberals could avoid.

When it comes to housing in Canada I don’t think it was wealthy Indians driving up the prices. In Vancouver and Toronto I think it was primarily those from Hong Kong and mainland china too. This prompted the law last year barring foreign investment in single family homes, if not used for a residence. But yes, there has also been an issue with fraudulent student visas from India, which has also caused a backlash.

There have also been a lot of complaints over lax asylum laws and generous welfare benefits. Not sure of the validity of these arguments, but this has of course been a major problem throughout western countries over the last decade.

Ultimately liberals need to address immigration, especially the illegal type head on. I think Biden likely lost the election within the first several months of his presidency due to the border. It’s a contentious issue, but open borders (or what is perceived to be open borders) is just as much of a killer politically as inflation.

they buy the homes for themselves as single families.

I'm talking about the ones coming on student visas through fake colleges and work low income jobs and multiple people staying in apartments which would normally go to young single people .

Biden actually deported more people than Trump but it followed a "boring" process through the legal system.

One problem is people associate the bs from the far left with democrats even through they hate democrats. That's why I say we need to be clear and forceful on our position.
