Starting this May, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is fully enforcing stricter identity verification procedures designed to strengthen service security and protect against fraud. These new measures, which officially took effect in April 2025, are now active across SSA offices and processes. The initiative aims to ensure that individuals' identities are thoroughly verified, reducing the risk of fraudulent activities.
As part of this initiative, individuals who cannot use their personal "my Social Security" account for certain services will now be required to verify their identity in person. This applies specifically to those applying for Retirement, Survivors, or Auxiliary benefits (such as Spousal or Child benefits). To help the public understand these updated requirements, the SSA has launched an informational webpage titled What to Know about Proving Your Identity.
Originally, the SSA planned to require in-person identity verification for all benefit applications when not using the online portal. However, after receiving feedback from clients, members of Congress, and other stakeholders, the agency revised the policy.
Applicants for Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicare, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are now exempt from the in-person requirement and can complete their applications entirely by phone if they are unable to access their "my Social Security" account.

(11,288 posts)I don't think so. The DOGE assholes, SHitler and Mike Lee want to convince Americans that SSA is rife with fraud when in reality it has a MINISCULE amount of fraud - MUCH LESS than any privatized retirement program.
Propping up the MAGAt/DOGE propaganda is what this fucking requirement is for.
OF COURSE, they aren't going to say that or admit their lies, so here we are.
FYI I logged into SSA.gov JUST TODAY and received a shitload of errors on the site. Clicking on links to download my statement or look at benefits at different ages resulted in error messages. It's a fucked -up mess. I've been logging into SSA for YEARS and never had any issue UNTIL SHitler and DOGE fucked it up.
So GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY, getting your benefits through the site they fucked up.
SOCIAL SECURITY is one of the best and most efficient, fraud-free programs in government. Or it WAS until MAGA Republicans and the billionaires they exclusively represent got in there and FUCKED. IT. UP.
Jesus Christmas on a shit-covered pogo stick.

(33,715 posts)that is the issue. Fine print. The GOP has been wanting to kill Social Security, and all government programs that assist or protect the little people... since FDR. Dreams are coming true.

(21,866 posts)I have an elderly relative (90 years old) whose mental capabilities are declining and who has no computer skills. When his wife died four years ago, he was a little more "with it" and tried to apply for survivor benefits, including going in person to a SS office and showing all documents, including a marriage license. He was refused the benefits because of WEP. The law was changed by Biden and he now qualifies. He can't do anything online, and can't seem to communicate with anyone about the situation when he does call. The nearest SS office is 50 miles from his home and he can't drive on the freeway. He has literally shown his documents in person a couple of years ago and they should have the copies on file. I don't know what's going to happen, but I think he is just never going to complete the process and won't get the benefits he deserves.

(11,108 posts)A handful of voter fraud in the USA was perpetrated, a really insignificant number. In almost all cases the GOP was doing it: voting for wife with absentee ballot, voting for deceased wife and landlords requesting ballots for tenants long since departed.
When they say less than 1% in this case, they may be obscuring a much lower number than real to gin up the let's crush the SS crowd.

(16,226 posts)just signed up for SS on Monday or Tuesday this week, online. She said she had to have a photo of herself or had to do facial recognition. I was a bit confused about what she was trying to tell me. Is that part of signing up for SS now?

(15,041 posts)One is people falsely claiming benefits, or collecting for people that are deceased. This is likely not very widespread, but in a program the size of SS, it may still amount to quite a bit of $$.
The other, which this change seems to be addressing, is people that are already receiving benefits having their direct deposits re directed by a scammer to their own account. I can't imagine not getting your check one month and finding out that your banking info was changed without your knowledge. Must be a nightmare trying to get that problem solved.
I certainly wouldn't want anyone stealing my monthly deposit that way. Making people go in person for banking changes would seem to be reasonable.
