Real Time with Bill Maher guests - Friday, May 2, 2025

Real Time with Bill Maher continues its 23rd season Friday, May 2 (10:00-11:00 p.m. live ET/7:00-8:00 p.m. PT), with a replay at 12:00 a.m., exclusively on HBO.

This week features a one-on-one interview with Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, actors and comedic duo who are the subjects of the documentary Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie.

This week's in-studio panel discussion will include journalist Kara Swisher, co-host of the Pivot podcast, host of On with Kara Swisher podcast, and author of Burn Book: A Tech Love Story; and Kevin McCarthy, former Republican congressman who represented California’s 20th district and served as the 55th Speaker of the House.

I've worked for them doing video stuff and it was one of the grimmest experiences I've ever had in LA, they are shameless moneygrubbing hacks who can barely stand to be in the same room together and the atmosphere is tense as hell. Some fake bonhomie now and then but on the whole, grim shit.

Such a contrast to the remaining two members of Firesign Theatre, who are absolutely lovely and adore each other. Who did the pot humor on LP infinitely better, too.

They’re damn good actors, I’ll give them that. I listened to an interview with them the other day on Stern and they pulled off the camaraderie thing very well. Complimenting each other, telling stories of the old days and having good laughs.

I like the characters. It doesn’t matter if they don’t actually like each other.

He's doing his best to make people forget his ass-kissing visit to the White House. It won't work.

Cheech and Chong have a just released a new movie. Perhaps you're not aware, but those with books and movies have this thing about promoting their new project wherever they can. I'm sure it will be brought up.

Looking back over the last several months, his guests have included Al Gore, Dana Carvey (his impersonations were wonderful!), Gavin Newsom, Adam Schiff, David Sedaris, Gov. Josh Shapiro, Rahm Emanuel, Fareed Zakaria, Sam Stein, Ezra Klein, John McWhorter, Chrystia Freeland, Jon Tester, and Sen. Tina Smith.

So no, I don't see anything of the sort going on. In the discussion with Al Gore last week, Gore said he understood Maher's meeting. He met with fRump in 2016 for what he described as “an extremely interesting conversation” at Trump Tower.

I bet if you hurry and provide a cohesive argument about how Bill Maher is an ass-kisser, and he's just using them, you should be able to convince them to cancel tonight's appearance!

Go quickly!

I don't recall bumping into Cheech and Chong for eons, should be fun!

On the other hand, Kevin McCarthy, eh. I'm not that familiar with Kara Swisher, but anyone who calls Mark Zuckerberg a 'small little creature with a shriveled soul' can't be all bad.

And of course, his opening and New Rules are always fun.

Thanks for posting!

for a bigoted, sexist, rich, white male TV celebrity who trashed President Biden and is now sucking up to Trump are to those who value democracy and support the Democratic Party.

McCarthy's on the panel - Maher will let him have opinions; that's the point.

I get that Maher’s a comedian and the show is meant to entertain, but he often overestimates how informed he is. He tends to let controversial guests off the hook—not out of malice, but because he lacks the depth to challenge them. Interviewers like Colbert or Marc Maron show more curiosity and preparation. That’s where Maher falls short for me.

This is a discussion board—so I’m sharing my take, respectfully.
