Steven A. Stebbins is the Acting Inspector General for the Department of Defense (DoD). As such, he also serves as the Special Inspector General for Operation ATLANTIC RESOLVE and the Lead Inspector General for Operation INHERENT RESOLVE and Operation ENDURING SENTINEL.

Mr. Stebbins was appointed the Principal Deputy Inspector General (PDIG) in April 2023 after serving as the acting PDIG since June 2020. In this role, he serves as the Chief Operating Officer of the Office of Inspector General (OIG). He was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in May 2015, when he joined the DoD OIG as the Chief of Staff.

Commissioned from Army ROTC as a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery in 1983, Mr. Stebbins served in the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea, the 82nd Airborne Division, and the 1st Armored and 3rd Infantry Divisions in West Germany at the end of the Cold War. In 1994 he left active duty and worked in private sector human resource management roles in Green Bay, Wisconsin while also serving in the Army Reserve. In late 2001 Mr. Stebbins volunteered for active duty on the Crisis Action Team in the Army Operations Center at the Pentagon, then continued his Army Staff service in the Directorate of Force Management. After serving with the Combined Security Transition Command / NATO Training Mission - Afghanistan, he led the U.S. Army Force Management Support Agency for four years before retiring from the Regular Army as a Colonel in 2015.

Mr. Stebbins earned a B.A. in History from the University of Vermont, where he was captain of the cross country team and ran track; an M.A. in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and an M.S. in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University.
