A woman has sued American Airlines, claiming she was sexually assaulted on a domestic flight last year by a man previously reported to the airline for sexual abuse allegations.
Barbara Morgan, of California, says she was sexually assaulted on a April 24, 2024, red-eye flight from San Francisco to Dallas, according to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California last week.
The suit accuses American Airlines of putting profits over passenger safety and that her alleged assailant, Cherian Abraham, was allowed to fly even though the airline had a notice of a 2023 sexual assault charge against him, the suit said.
Even after reporting the assault, Morgan said she was left traumatized when the airline allegedly ignored her and victim-blamed her.
An attorney for Abraham did not immediately respond to NBC News request for comment. American Airlines said Thursday that Abraham will no longer be allowed to fly with the airline.

Why was he allowed to fly after the first instance? He should have been put on a "no-fly" list right then

(35,567 posts)Seattle A 54-year-old Allen, Texas man who was flying from Chicago to Seattle was charged federally with abusive sexual contact for his repeated illegal touching of the victim sitting next to him, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller. Cherian Abraham, who works for a technology company, and the victim, were interviewed at SEA airport when the plane arrived on March 18, 2025. Mr. Abraham was arrested on Sunday March 23, 2025, and had an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Seattle on Monday, March 24, 2025.
According to the criminal complaint, Abraham was seated next to the 22-year-old victim on the flight. On three different occasions, the victim reported that he reached under her arm to touch her breast. The first time the victim thought perhaps it was inadvertent contact. The second time, some five minutes later, the victim looked pointedly at Abraham and he withdrew his hand. Apparently undeterred, the victim felt Abraham again poking her with his hand and she verbally confronted him. The victim got out of her seat, contacted the flight attendant, and was moved to a different seat.
When interviewed at SEA airport, Abraham denied touching the victim inappropriately.
An investigation by the responding FBI agent revealed that Abraham had twice before been alleged to have touched fellow passengers inappropriately. On April 24, 2024, a victim reported to the airlines online customer service portal that Abraham had repeatedly touched her and attempted to put his hand between her thighs. The victim yelled at Abraham but was not able to get the attention of a flight attendant. On October 9, 2023, Minneapolis Airport Police interviewed Abraham after a victim reported that he had touched her leg with an open hand three times. The victim told him to stop and contacted the flight crew who put her in a different seat. When interviewed Abraham denied touching the victim. The victim did not want to pursue charges.
Abraham was released on bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 7, 2025.

(418 posts)I'm glad to read that the woman in this report, when she was sure that a second touch was intentional and not accidental, told him directly to stop. When he continued, she shouted, left her seat and reported him. Don't freeze please is my polite request for women suffering from unwanted touch. My aggressive advice is to tell the offender to "Stop it". Bring attention, by making noise, standing up, declaring the offending touch in clear language. " Top touching my breast. I know you are doing this on purpose". "This man is groping
me" This guy is putting his hand up my skirt, I need help now!" Women in general need to allow themselves to be heard in such an egregious situation. Our society has raised many/most women to accept deplorable behavior. This needs to change.
