I see that my state rep thinks basic scientific research falls into one of the nebulous categories of waste, fraud, or abuse. I sent the following letter, which I obtained from the Union of Concerned Scientists and was forwarded to federal and state representatives and senators:
Dear Representative xxx,
I am writing as your constituent to ask that you act immediately to prevent American science from being permanently damaged by the Trump administration.
Federally-funded science unlocks life-saving advances, fuels innovative technologies, solves our toughest challenges. It has made the scientific enterprise in the United States the best in the world. All of that is now at risk.
Scientific research and innovation is not a switch that can be flipped on or off. If we do not act immediately to restore the scientific funding and staffing that has been slashed by the current administration, it may take decades to recover.
Every dollar that we invest in scientific research returns at least five dollars in economic and social benefits. If you do not act now to restore scientific funding it will undermine our prosperity, our democracy, and our childrens futures for decades to come.
The Trump administrations attacks on the very foundations of American science impact every corner of our society. That demands an equally forceful response from our elected officials at every level.
I am asking you to do everything you can to stop and reverse the destructive actions of this administration undermining scientific funding and research, that will only make the United States weaker and less prosperous. Science needs you.
Sincerely,
Me
And heres the dismissive, snarky response:
Mr. EYESORE,
Thank you for reaching out to the office of State Representative xxx.
Representative xxx has no intention to disavow the ongoing efforts to curb extreme fraud, waste, and abuse of American taxpayer dollars by malign actors in the federal government.
Enjoy your day.
Regards,
Feckless Flack
Im not too surprised, but it almost rises to the level of trolling constituents. No response at all would have been preferable.
