Canadians have a very compelling reason not to join the US. They have one of the most representative legislative bodies in the world and we have one of the least. Canada has 343 representatives in the House of Commons in comparison to our 435 in the House of Representatives. With 40 million people, Canada has 116,618 people per riding. The same figure for the US is 781,609. Only India, at 5 times our size, has a larger number of people per district. Our Congress has fewer members than the UK, France, Germany and Spain, all of which are much smaller than us. It should be noted that our size is regulated by a 1919 law and thus if we added Canada we would have 435 members for 380 million people instead of the 340 million we have now. That would be 873,563 people per seat. No one in their right mind would voluntarily enter into districts that much larger than the current ones. In Canada there would be massive districts (likely larger than Alaska).

(34,804 posts)We can't go back to the status quo. It's the perfect time to tear down the last vestiges of slavery.
No more 3/5 compromise.
No more electoral college.
One person, one vote.
Expand the House.
Give D.C. two Senators.
I'm friends with Javier Hernandez (lives down the street from us) who is an arch PR leave the USA proponent/author. I'm pro PR going the way of Singapore and becoming very wealthy. We've been in their way for far too long.

If we ever get another Democratic member of the House in the NJ-7th - I want them there until the day they die.
I've had Leonard Lance, Tom Malinowski (D) and now Tom Kean Jr.
