Oliver Willis: time for Dems to pivot from Clinton "small govt" position and embrace FDR big govt doing great things

Oliver Willis
‪@owillis.bsky.social‬
this would be a great moment for democrats/liberals to pivot from bill clinton's bad and self-destructive "small government" positioning and fully embrace fdr/lincoln style "the federal government is big and does great things when it has good leaders" positioning

CNN: These numbers are very disturbing for Trump. 57% say they are pessimistic or afraid because Trump has dissected the federal government. 66% of people are not happy with the economy

It is a bit of a double edged sword. FDR like programs likely will add to the deficit. I do think the national debt needs to be reduced significantly for our kids and grandkids and our place in the world economy and we need to take that issue away from the GOP. (not that they do anything with it other than beat us over the head with it). And I think there are ways to do both but the complexity of that linkage is not easy to explain in soundbites. Some of the younger/newer Dem reps that ran in 2024 have given voice to this while also acknowledging they have heard their constituents on inflation and other issues that are key to the average voter. As bad as Trump and the GOP is behaving, we have to listen and acknowledge the pain and worry many people are feeling, not be dismissive and be willing to prioritize, not just run against Trump the evil doer.

We should never turn away from his Social Democratic Ideals. And we should embrace Democratic Socialism as far as we can. Bernie & AOC are the thought leaders. We should follow. Green New Deal, Blue New Deal. New Deal!

about the Great Depression. Nothing like this century. An increasingly radical Republican Party controlled Congress six out of eight years of both Clinton and Obama administrations, two of Biden's.

But blame Bill Clinton!
