Amazon decline trickles down to huge UPS layoff

UPS has announced that an anticipated drop in Amazon deliveries will impact the shipping company's workforce. The company announced Tuesday it was shedding 20,000 workers, CBS News reported.

As tariffs take effect, Americans are showing a lack of interest in paying the 145% tax on goods imported from China — resulting in an expected decline in Amazon purchases. President Donald Trump introduced the tariffs as part of his hardball approach to persuade China to comply with his demand for lower tariffs on goods entering the U.S. from China.

According to CBS, the reduction of 20,000 employees is equivalent to a little more than 4% of its 490,000-person workforce.

The company also announced it would be closing 73 of its buildings by the end of June 2025. There may be further building closures, the company said.

The goal is to achieve higher profits, executives said during a Tuesday morning earnings call.

If most corporations reduce their work force by 4%, we will be at double-digit unemployment in no time. Midnight Writer Tuesday #5

I did not much care for their service and goods anyway, but there is no way I am buying 'cheap' stuff that doubles in price when you get the invoice to pay. These things have an absolutely predictable outcome - I did not need the junk from places like Temu in the first place and no American company is making the stuff they peddle either. Their business is now zero, the repalcement in the USA is non-existent and there will never be a replacement started.

As consumers stop spending, anyone in the import/export game is going to be bankrupted. The delivery jobs and service infrastructure will erode FAST, millions of jobs lost, and the economy as a whole will slide into recession and depression unless Trump is removed, period.

Step 1 - pour accelerants and gasoline on the kindling...
Step 2 - hand the matches to a pyromaniac...
Step 3 - take one fucking guess...

Since Amazon started making deliveries I haven’t seen a UPS delivery or FedEx for that matter.

However, this tidbit stood out to me: The goal is to achieve higher profits, executives said during a Tuesday morning earnings call.

Higher profits! Workforce decimated but Higher profits are the most important thing, dontchaknow!

I feel bad so many people are losing their livelihoods because of maga. He really has turned our country into a shithole country. Isn’t that the term he loves to banter about?

Congratulations dipshitdon! You won on turning our country into the Dark Ages and at breakneck speeds!

If their business falls off and they keep staffing levels high, profits will fall. They are trying to balance resources to traffic.

They hire like crazy at times also.

The story here isn't them balancing their books, it's the reason they have to do it.

We are in a downward spiral, and even if trump reverses course today on every EO he has put into place, the spiral will keep moving down.

Profits down-massive layoff of workers-layoff repercussions ripple though economy causing -more loss of profits-meaning more layoffs-lather, rinse, repeat ad infinitum.
