Amazon displaying tariff prices "hostile and political," White House says

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt slammed Amazon's reported plan to display the breakdown of how much tariffs are adding to the price of each good as a "hostile and political act" on Tuesday.

Why it matters: Amazon's plan exposes the growing rift between businesses and President Trump who has made aggressive tariffs and a global trade war central to his economic agenda.
Trump's massive 145% tariffs on Chinese imports will hit Amazon hard because 60% of its sales come from smaller, independent retailers often heavily reliant on imports.
Driving the news: Punchbowl reported Tuesday that Amazon will soon show how much of an item's cost is due to tariffs next to the total listed price.

CEOs of three of the nation's biggest retailers (Walmart, Target and Home Depot) also recently warned Trump his policies could hurt supply chains, empty shelves and increase prices, Axios' Marc Caputo and Ben Berkowitz reported.

My only regret is my husband likes the shows on prime video and won’t let me cancel.

Now I am buy from EBay ( blue state sellers) and Temu which now has a disclaimer local seller or not subject to tariffs tax !

Show the Trump tariffs as a separate line item on every receipt just like taxes.

It makes perfect sense for retailers because then they are off the hook. Consumers need to redirect their anger towards the idiots in the White House.

And it makes it harder to accuse retailers of price gouging when it’s all written out. Though the tariffs might cause prices to go up indirectly because of shortages.

That's what she always says. Well, time to live up to it and lets have transparency on the tariffs. Let consumers and the voters decide.

Here, she spoke of speaking to Trump and agreeing with him that doing this is hostile and political. Note that point is what most focus on. However, she went on to argue that Amazon did not do this "when Biden "raised" inflation to the highest level in 40 years". Because that is spoken almost as a given, no one is challenging that Presidents do not control inflation so it is not the same as the impact of Trump's policy.

It is noteworthy to consider the inflation from 40 years before. Like the recent inflation, it was due to a major disruption to the economy. In the late 1970s it was OPEC not just raising oil prices but creating a scarcity. At the height, interest rates for mortgages were as high as 16 to 17 percent.

This inflation was preceded by what was easily a bigger disruption caused by COVID and then the difficulty of reestablishing supply networks. MOYet, between Biden and the fed, although inflation was real and it hurt, it was nowhere near the 1980s levels and surprisingly, we avoided a recession.

The other, more obvious point, is that where the amount paid in a tariff in known to the penny, the amount attributable to "inflation" has many possible costs.

I think he did that to give the Trump administration a taste of their own tariff medicine, and warn him how much this tariff thing is going to cost him in terms of his approval rating.
I'm sure all the major retailers have done the cost analysis of this tariff war, and don't like how the numbers play out.
We aren't even at the empty shelves part of the process yet.
It's gonna get nasty if the tariff war runs for a couple more months.

Eventually Trump will be forced to cave in. It's a sure bet the Chinese won't.

And the administration whould want it too. Maybe I look for a different supplier of something I am buying if I can eliminate the tariff charge. Isn't this exactly what they're saying they want, people to start buying American?
