CNBC presser tariff display is a "hostile and political act" by Amazon - Scott Bessent

The White House on Tuesday slammed Amazon for reportedly planning to display the cost of President Donald Trump’s tariffs next to the total price of products on its site.

“This is hostile and political act by Amazon,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a press briefing.

Shares of the retail giant founded by Jeff Bezos dropped in premarket trading following the remarks.

Trying to control the narrative. Why bother? Only the dumbest can't see what's going on with prices!

Into believing believing tariffs were paid by foreign governments - that it was free money coming in so we could tax ourselves. I even had an extended conversation with someone intelligent enough to understand that tariffs would result in price increases - who still described, in detail, how the foreign government collects the tariffs to send to the US (and the foreign manufacturer would need to decide whether to increase it's prices enough to cover the tariffs they would need to pay).

So, unfortunately, it's not o only the dumbest who still believe tariffs are simply a tax on ourselves.

This is a threat designed to make a deal with Trump.

They're all imitating Trump now. Threat, posture, bluster - then quietly make secret deals.

The country is run by mobsters.

I’m not sure why Bessent would have a problem with the transparency since he thinks the tariffs are such a great idea.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt slammed Amazon's reported plan to display the breakdown of how much tariffs are adding to the price of each good as a "hostile and political act" on Tuesday.

Why it matters: Amazon's plan exposes the growing rift between businesses and President Trump who has made aggressive tariffs and a global trade war central to his economic agenda.

• Trump's massive 145% tariffs on Chinese imports will hit Amazon hard because 60% of its sales come from smaller, independent retailers often heavily reliant on imports.

Driving the news: Punchbowl reported Tuesday that Amazon will soon show how much of an item's cost is due to tariffs next to the total listed price.

• CEOs of three of the nation's biggest retailers (Walmart, Target and Home Depot) also recently warned Trump his policies could hurt supply chains, empty shelves and increase prices, Axios' Marc Caputo and Ben Berkowitz reported.
• That pressure coincided with the White House softening its tone on trade talks with China.

Transparency and the consumer wants to know what their order costs, broken down by category. I make my decision on whether to buy from a retailer based on what it cost to do business with them. If I can buy something cheaper at another retailer, I’ll back out of an order and get it cheaper (or faster) elsewhere, What is wrong with telling the consumer what the price is — in detail? If tariffs are such a great idea, be honest. Tell the consumer what the tariff cost is. Stop trying to hide it.
