140 members of Yale Universitys Class of 1984 have signed a letter urging their classmate, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, to reconsider his role in what they describe as the Trump administrations dangerous slide toward authoritarianism.
Scott, please take a moment to step back, look down the road a piece, and think hard about whether you want to be responsible for enabling the descent of America into fascism, the letter pleads.
The message is a pointed appeal to Bessents conscience and sense of civic duty. The letter accuses Donald Trumps second administration of pursuing an agenda that is unconstitutional and fundamentally at odds with the principles of American democracy. It calls on Bessent to be brave, to stand up for what you know to be right, and to act as a voice of reason in the midst of this insanity.
The signatories a cross-section of American society including lawyers, CEOs, journalists, professors, playwrights, a pastor, a farmer, and social workers emphasize that their concerns are not partisan but existential. They frame their warning in terms Bessent, a former Political Science major and adjunct professor of economic history at Yale, would immediately recognize: the checks and balances designed to prevent an executive overreach are, they argue, being eroded from within.
