Proficiency in English, which I designated as our official national language in Executive Order 14224 of March 1, 2025 (Designating English as the Official Language of the United States), should be a non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers. They should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station officers. Drivers need to provide feedback to their employers and customers and receive related directions in English. This is common sense.
That is why Federal law requires that, to operate a commercial vehicle, a driver must read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records. Yet this requirement has not been enforced in years, and Americas roadways have become less safe.

(742 posts)I've known a significant number who couldn't express a detailed, nuanced, grammatical thought with the aid of flash cards. I've known a couple who were outraged at the complexities of a sit-down menu. And they drive. Licenses and everything.
And fluency in the written language - presumably POTUS, who gives evidence weekly of an inability to read, is ok with the thought that he wouldn't qualify to be a trucker?
What about polyglots? Assuming someone with a different mother tongue achieved sufficient fluency in English and possibly other languages, are they forbidden to ever be heard speaking anything else? What if their boss or some official is in need of a skilled translator? (Presumably speaking to a non-trucker.) Must they decline? Can they never speak to relatives in the Old Country again?
What kind of English? Standardized Midwestern, such as is the 'received English' of broadcasting? One of the East Coast dialects? One of the Southerns? East Texas? Northern Minnesota and North Dakota? (Uff da, yah, you betcha!) Who administers the test? When, where and is there a fee? How do you make sure it's applied to everyone equally? (Sarcasm)
And are some second languages less acceptable than others? Gee, which would those be? Are German and Irish ok? Is Xhosa on the good list or not? What about Afrikaans?
This is a stupid order, from a stupid, stupid man and his stupid, stupid cohorts.
