Online Passport renewal has been shut down

The site is up but not possible to use. Pay.gov is "under maintenance" since last week. It forces people to mail in the forms with their current docs with the hope and prayer the will come back.

Also last week, 1000s of big corporations were notified the have to get new I-9 from all employees by the end of the fiscal year. Most seem to be in banking and tech. The reason sited is mergers over the last 5 years.

Is it something? Nothing? A discussion among old ladies today I find I am not the only one with spider senses popping up.

Pre-check, global entry, federal license fees (maritime, aviation, etc), hundreds of fees get routed through pay.gov.

5. As far as I know, passport renewals have been mail-in for several years - perhaps always.

You have to mail your old passport in, as well as a new passport photo. The last 3 renewals in our family were mail-in. 2015 (I think), 2023, and 2024. The most recent one was very tight on time, since my spouse forgot to check to see if her passport was still valid. If there had been a non-mail version, we would have used it. As to the 2023 one, ny daughter does everything online that it is possible to do online, and she mailed hers in. I don't remember looking for an online version for mine in 2015 - but the post office screwed up my photo and it got rejected, so the post office agreed to pay for express mail both directions to get it back on time.

Online is a more recent animal. I used it just a couple of months ago to renew mine. It was really easy; had a friend take my photo with my phone, uploaded it, and sent it along with the online verification of my info. Received it back within about three weeks. I didn't have to send in my old passport; they just deactivated it (the barcode).

13. That's exactly why I did, too. About a month ago. Everything online. Took my own photo. It passed scrutiny.

9. Renewed Passport Online

I renewed my passport completely online this last February 2025. I was worried but it was very easy. You do have to meet the qualifications in order to renew online. I did not have to mail back my expiring passport. My husband followed the guidelines given for passport pictures and took a few pictures of me on my iPhone. The first picture was rejected so I tried the next one. The second picture was accepted. I wanted to get passport renewed before there were any more cuts.
