President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order at 5 p.m. Monday requiring commercial truck drivers in the United States to speak English, "America's official language," according to his spokeswoman
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt tweeted a link to a Breitbart article on Monday morning.
A document reviewed by Breitbart said, "President Trump believes that English is a non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers, as they should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety officers, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station personnel, and provide and receive feedback and directions in English."
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will be directed to rescind and replace guidance to strengthen inspection procedures for compliance with English proficiency requirements, the document said.

Overview
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) opened the U.S.-Mexico border in January of 2015, authorizing a select list of Mexican carriers to operate in long-haul commerce beyond U.S. border municipalities and commercial zones. This initiative followed a thorough evaluation to ensure their ability to operate safely within the United States. The carriers underwent rigorous safety assessments to confirm compliance with U.S. regulations, helping to promote cross-border trade while maintaining high safety standards on American highways. This move marked a significant step in facilitating international commerce while ensuring road safety.
The Mexico Long-Haul Program is part of FMCSAs implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) / United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) cross-border long-haul trucking provisions. The Program allows approved Mexico-domiciled motor carriers to operate throughout the United States with provisional authority for 18 months. United States-domiciled motor carriers have been granted reciprocal rights to operate in Mexico. The carriers undergo a comprehensive compliance review at the end of 18 months and are issued standard authority upon obtaining a Satisfactory rating.

(124,508 posts)or they wouldn't have been approved for it. I wonder if Mexico will require US drivers operating in the program to be fluent in Spanish (and chances are they can read Spanish street signs)?

(1,398 posts)Even there they must be able to read, understand and speak English - not necessarily fluently.
In Texas all commercial truck drivers must be able to read, understand and speak English.
Anyone know if there is a state that doesnt mandate English?
Again, an executive order for laws that already exist.
Another MAGA photo op.

(124,508 posts)but adequate to read street signs and otherwise operate safely. So how fluent will they require truck drivers to be? Read street signs or complete an essay exam on twentieth-century American literature? Is this going to be like the ridiculous tests for voting during the Jim Crow era, designed to eliminate as many Spanish-speaking truck drivers as possible? Krasnov designated English as the official language of the US by executive order, but executive orders have no effect outside the executive branch. There is no federal statute designating English as the official language.

If the English Language is such a concern then I suggest ALL truckers must speak perfect English and that means no ain't, you'll, f__k, hissself...
