While Trump is blubbering about taking over the Panama Canal, Mexico has been making plans for a cheaper and faster alternative, that reduces dependency on the Panama Canal for inter oceanic transport - and yes China is investing heavily

(96 posts)Including historic drought and low tides likely brought on global warming - this led to ships back logged and being on the waiting list to cross as long as 2 weeks and apparently they dont see a short term fix
While Mexicos approach will surely face some growing pains once the rail infrastructure is completed, it would be much faster and cheaper (according to the planners)

(19,885 posts)So you have to unload ships on one side, rail line it, and reload other ships on the other side. I struggle to see how it's faster or cheaper.

(96 posts)so potentially China's investment might come in the form of this high speed railway and it can traverse that line in < 1 hour while a ship crosses the panama canal between 8-10 hours assumnig they get the green light to start the traverse (as previously noted waiting times can be as long as 2 weeks)
so it boils down t speed of offloading/loading the cargo onto railways - china has this expertise as well
