on busesSen. Dick Durbin said it's "pathetic" that Republican governors are making empty promises to migrants as they relocate them to different parts of the country.
It comes amid a wave of Democratic criticisms of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who have flown and bussed immigrants to northern states and Washington, DC as a political stunt.
Speaking with NBC's Chuck Todd on "Meet The Press," Durbin said he met with immigrants who had been relocated to Chicago.
"I met with the people who came off the buses. I sat down with one of the families, and they told me the story," Durbin said. "It is pathetic that these governors are taking advantage of these helpless people, making promises to them to get on the bus and life is just going to be fine, and off they go to places far removed from where they're supposed to be appearing under the requirements of our law in a matter of weeks and months."

(9,003 posts)Does anyone have a brain or a solution to stop this. If I was an overworked immigration lawyer I'd be royally pissed.

(60,584 posts)That says IF a refugee is transported by a state or local government, the federal government will change the place where they are to be supposed to appear AND they will be given some compensory credit for having agreed to that government to be moved. Additionally costs to transport the refugees from where they were dropped off will be charged to the government that moved them.

(10,749 posts)Senator,
It wasnt pathetic.
It wasnt a stunt.
It wasnt dereliction of duty.
It was a crime.
It was human trafficking.
It was child abuse.
It was kidnapping
It was forced imprisonment.
It was misappropriation of federal funding.
Why arent these monsters being investigated for these and other crimes?

(98,089 posts)In the bordering states, arrest the drivers, take the people on the buses back to where they were picked up or put them up in a safe place and get them to where they need to be.
Arrest those governors and anyone else involved.
They are committing federal crimes and harming thousands of refugees IN OUR COUNTRY!!!
Fuck those assholes with a sand covered rumper flagpole.

(16,071 posts)and refuse them entry?
That doesn't seem like it would be legal

(98,089 posts)Not denying them entry since they were already inside the US. That they are being shipped, SHIPPED, illegally on commercial vehicles means the feds can shut down the buses regardless of who the freight is and where they were being taken if it is outside the immigration protocols and crossing state lines.
Your argument sounds a lot like those who are complaining that those who ended up in Martha's Vineyard or anywhere else are being denied because they were sent to more accommodating facilities as if the unsuspecting residents were supposed to put them up in their homes.
People want ti know how this can be stopped right away, that's one quick way to go about it.

(16,071 posts)They wouldn't know which ones were being used that were transporting migrants from Texas, so they would need to stop and board every bus entering the state. Do you really think that would be s good idea and would pass a court challenge? I don't.
Maybe search all the passengers for drugs or weapons, and check for outstanding warrants as long as you already stopped them anyway, right?
You are correct that is one way to stop it; by empowering police to stop vehicles to look to see if there if there are any migrants on board.

(98,089 posts)Also, buses are searched regularly. The order can be specific as to what they look for and how they go about it. This is breaking transportation laws as well as immigration laws. Your argument doesn't make a lot of sense if you know about interstate transportation law.

(34,006 posts)It's been going on for a long time.
However, if a bus has been ordered to turn their radio off by Abbott, then it would be a transportation law violation
As to whether the bus thing is breaking immigration laws..it's complicated...
I know people who work with asylum seekers. They arrive in town via bus from the border. (I live in San Antonio) They stay at a shelter, then they get a bus ticket to join a host family. Usually the family is in another state. Then, they go.
The federal government also does mass transportation of migrants. (Usually unaccompanied minors)
However, there are some areas: Are the destination of the bus trips affecting the immigrations court dates? That is something that has not been answered.
There are plenty of ethical, good faith and abuse (use of power) questions.
Are individuals rights protected? It's complicated.

Also the Garland has been sparring over Abbott with this to no avail...

Apparently, Abbott's bus scam prevents immigrants from their hearings. CBP got in Abbott, but did not charge him or anything. They just send him letters or something. Nothing gets done.

A year ago, Abbott was mad that he couldn't ship people out of the state.
Now he's shipping them out....
Abbott lost his case, but looks like he won on appeal
