Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsBill Maher is a fucking idiot. Spewing that the young don't have a problem with the virus. What
Maher seems to be missing the small detail that THEY ARE SPREADERS
This is almost as insane as when he was promoting that goat milk doctor cures AIDS
So he has a fox sports jackass pushing how the media is over reacting about Covid, and Maher says amen
I havent watched Maher for sometime now, and now I remember why
The crazy assed bullshit medical advice he periodically gives
I am not sure what he was trying to say when he said slave owners were a product of their times? Was he trying to justify slavery? Just absurd
There were enough people who knew the immorality of slavery

(53,214 posts)especially since the pandemic. I haven't seen his show in over a month and I think I'm done with him. I've been watching Maher since the days of Politically Incorrect, but it appears his best days are behind him.
This crap about young people is ridiculous. They are spreaders and we don't know yet what the long term effects of the virus are. Meanwhile, for those who have lost a child, it is cruel and irresponsible to publicly broadcast that young people are unaffected by the virus.

their times
Guess what Bill, people back then realized slavery was wrong. Product of their times is no excuse
They can use that excuse to justify anything
Really disappointing

(53,214 posts)Maybe too much time home alone. It seems to be bringing the worst out in him. I usually like that he will say things that other people are afraid to say, but now he's venturing into nutty territory. I am not sure what audience he thinks he is appealing to, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear some Trump supporter quoting him one day.
I wonder how much longer he'll have an HBO show.

(61,033 posts)to be controversial, to get a rise out of people and hope they repeat it. West has said enslavement was voluntary and Harriette Tubman took slaves and sold them to other slave holdersjust ridiculous stuff.
West is crazy. I didn't think Maher was but repeating that old excuse that slave holders were men of their times is so bogus, maybe he's losing it too. Guess he forgot about the abolitionists who existed in slave holders times.
Maher might as well have said "a president who holds kids in cages is a product of his time." Ridiculous.
Now he'll have to contribute another million to Biden's campaign to smooth it over, like he did to the Obama campaign.

(3,921 posts)got popular by being on his show. And iirc he's friends with Bari Weiss.
He's your typical alt-Bro who resents anyone telling a white man what to do.
It's true that most people are a product of their times and we need to view historical figures in that context. But the point of this moment and our reckoning around race and gender issues now is that if we fail to correct the sins of past then systemic injustices remain baked into the system. So it's not about the past as much as it's about what we do now.
For example, confederate statues must be removed as they stand as current symbols of white supremacy. They need to be in museums where we can understand them in their proper historical context.

(53,214 posts)he identified as a Libertarian, which has become an alt-asshole party and rather explains his self-absorbed personality. He only started calling himself a liberal when Bush was in office. Before that, he was critical and antagonistic toward both Democrats and republicans. He didn't have much good to say about either party. The corruption and deceit of the republican party seemed to have woke him up, though he probably wasn't alone in that.
I will give him credit for evolving, many people did, but apparently the old smug, self-absorbed aspect of his personality has lingered.
Music Man
(1,664 posts)He kept drawing comparisons to WWII, saying that people played sports through it. "We are can do people," he said.
There is no comparison to a physical war being fought overseas and an invisible virus infecting our population. What do you bet if the Nazis had been in the streets of America, there wouldn't have been a hell of a lot of football games happening?

(1,664 posts)He may be critical of our side, and does say some ill-informed things from a place of...whatever...but he's essentially one of us, and his bits are funny. There's a reason he's had the long comedy career he has.
Besides, to each their own, right? I'll love whom I want

(20,603 posts)Ive seen him live multiple times going back to 1998 and maintain an HBO subscription largely for the purpose of watching his show.
There are a lot of things that I dont like, such as his constant embrace of the Dems is disarray narrative and the near constant refrain of how did we get here with Biden as the nominee.
Hes also often wrong, especially when talking about polling. There seems to be a near constant failure from whoever does the research to use fresh polling or to correctly frame that polling. Tonight he said Hillary was out performing Biden at this time in 2016. Thats not true, and has been covered on 538 and Harry Enten on CNN and many others extensively.
The segment with Cowherd was embarrassing. After 5 months its pretty clear that Bill just doesnt understand this virus.
Ill keep watching mostly because of the guests. But its not the same show anymore and Bills not the same guy. Hes morphed into my dad.

(319,134 posts)getting the trump virus & many are dying from it?
Take the Georgia summer camp for instance..
Hundreds of Georgia campers infected with coronavirus at YMCA camp in just days, CDC report finds
In total, the virus attacked 44% of the children, staff members and trainees who attended the camp
The CDC said that what happened at High Harbor shows that earlier thinking that children might not be as susceptible to COVID-19 is wrong. According to the report, the age group with the most positive coronavirus tests was 6 - 10 years old.
I hate it when anyone says it's "overblown". trump 'caused it to be OVERBLOWN. by calling it a "democrat hoax" for 70 days.
That's WHY People have to Be so GD CAREFUL NOW. 😷😷😷😷😷

Not surprising from some of his crap from the past, but disappointing that he is essentially pushing trump science, which is no science

(56,112 posts)I like him, most of the time and don't expect him to be some goddamned paragon of virtue, but when medical issues abound, he usually misses the mark.
As for the "product of their times", that is what many were. He was wrong in claiming no one was against slavery, there were those against it for as long as it has existed in one form or another. However, the crux of the monologue was people need to get the fuck over themselves with "atoning" for every "sin" of the past, including those they didn't commit. He was also speaking to those "holier than thou" assholes who scream, stamp their feet, and shake their fists about how they couldn't have owned slaves, or aided the Nazis, or pushed Native Americans off their land. They are no different than historical revisionists in many respects. They take a modern, and mostly common, stance, and pretend they would have been the same person they are today even if they were born in 1820. While it is true, some here may not have wanted to own slaves, or been abolitionists, or stood up to the powers that be, but more often than not, they would have, possibly, looked like the liberals and progressives OF THE TIME, not of OUR time, and trust me, those "liberals" would NOT be liberals, for the most part, today. That is the point; though, IMO, he worded it in such a way that was convoluted and distracting.

(98,883 posts)word was a more objective description than I presented, but my problem was that his point of people going overboard on their criticism of people of the past being a product of their times, is not only too simplistic, it is too easy to use that excuse to justify almost anything, and a line has to be drawn on some things
Convoluted is a good description, because it is a difficult point to articulate

He needs to retire. He's just a bitter, cranky whiner now, which is crazy since he correctly goes after trump for his whining!
